mental health and psychosocial disability
Mental health occupational therapy aims to support individuals in improving their quality of life by enhancing participation in everyday activities and providing strategies to better manage daily functioning while experiencing symptoms of psychosocial disability or mental illness. This is achieved through strengthening routines, developing skills (such as time management, grounding techniques, and social skills), promoting relationships and connections, and creating environments that support recovery.
At Fast Track OT, we practice trauma-informed care, guided by the following principles of recovery:
Volition: Focusing on the person’s unique wants, interests, goals, and aspirations.
Environment: Understanding the interactions between the individual and their physical and social environment.
Self-Determination: Empowering the individual to guide their therapy and make informed decisions.
Hope: Encouraging a positive outlook toward the future.
Routine: Building structured routines that harness the restorative benefits of regularity and habit.
Skill Development: Supporting the growth of skills to foster greater independence over time.
Empowerment: Restoring choice and control to everyday life.
Building Connections: Recognising the importance of social connection and support networks.
At Fast Track OT, we aim to understand your daily life and how mental illness or psychosocial disability may affect you, using evidence-based approaches and frameworks tailored to your unique needs and preferences.
We recognise that mental illness and psychosocial disability may coexist with other health conditions, and that multiple challenges may be present at once. We apply the same compassionate strategies to all participants to ensure dignity and respect are maintained, regardless of the primary reason for seeking occupational therapy support.
